Mission

We, the members of the West Hartford African American Social & Cultural Organization, hold as our mission, the facilitation of fair and equitable participation in the civic, political, economic, and cultural activities within the West Hartford community.

Objectives

  • To provide cultural, social, and emotional support to its members.
  • To provide a continuing cultural identity to its members and their families.
  • To share and exchange common experiences.
  • To expose its members to the economic, social, and political issues which impact their lives.
  • To confirm by its presence, that West Hartford has always had an African American community.
  • To acknowledge the successes and accomplishments of its members.
  • To serve as a vehicle in bringing together African American residents of West Hartford.
  • To show an appreciation for the many rich and varied accomplishments that African Americans have made and continue to make in our town, state, and nation.

History

In 1979, a small group of West Hartford African American residents felt the need to meet with other African Americans in town on a continuing basis, to share their experiences, and to discuss the stresses of living in a predominantly white suburban community.

Social and educational issues impacting their children while enrolled in the West Hartford school system were of primary importance. By identifying common experiences that their children were confronting, particularly in the areas of teacher attitude, school receptivity and parent involvement, strategies were developed. With these strategies, members were better able to address their children’s educational, cultural, and social needs.

Over the years, the organization has grown. There has been increased participation in town government and civic affairs. More importantly, personal friendships have been formed and nurtured, providing the members with a strong connection to the larger community. As a result, members are ready to provide ongoing support and assistance to each other.

Throughout the years, emotional bonding, as well as family, social, and cultural support have continued to strengthen the organization and its purpose.
