TENTH ANNUAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARDS:
CELEBRATING A DECADE OF LIVING HISTORY, 1998 – 2007

(WEST HARTORD, CONN., May 11, 2007) - Linda Howey, Chair of West Hartford’s Tenth Annual Historic Preservation Awards Program, is pleased to announce that three properties were honored at a Town Hall ceremony on May 10th.  Mayor Scott Slifka presented the awards as winners were introduced by Gregory Galvin, Chair of the West Hartford Historic District Commission.  The Historic Preservation Awards Program was introduced in 1998 to encourage sensitive renovations to any town properties constructed prior to 1945 which maintain traditional value. A First Place Award  was presented to Mary Jo and Gregory Andrews of 1643 Boulevard, located in the Boulevard – Raymond Road Historic District, in recognition of the sympathetic one story addition of a family room which accommodates modern life while maintaining the historic architecture of their 1900 Colonial Revival “American  Foursquare” home.  Appropriate materials were carefully selected to be compatible with the original structure of the house and original features such as posts and railings of the rear porch were retained resulting in a seamless matching of old to new, back to front.

Catherine and Stephen Pedro of 131 Walbridge Road also received a First Place Award for the magnificent restoration implemented by Richard Hughes, Architect, of exterior building features which revive the original 1928 design for their Colonial Revival home.  Aluminum siding was removed and original cedar clapboards as well as other features such as windows, trim, dentil molding, and the front portico were restored.  Posts and railings which had been removed from the sunroom during the 1970’s have also been restored.

A Second Place Award was presented to Margaret and William Smith of 29 Bishop Road in recognition of the fine restoration of exterior building features by David Booth Beers, CGR, which revive the original 1923 design for their Colonial Revival home.  Inappropriate features such as an aluminum awning, storm door and sliding glass windows were removed and replaced using appropriate style, proportions, and materials.  Original stucco was also restored to the entire house.

During this Tenth Annual Ceremony a framed piece listing the fifty-four winners from 1998 to 2007 was presented to Mayor Slifka for permanent display at Town Hall.  Graphic designer, James Rigby, was recognized for his fine work on this piece as well as the many posters and brochures he has done for the Historic District Commission over the years.   He has transformed our ideas into works of art.   Bravo, Jim!

The awards jury included Les Brodacki, Chris Dobbs, Karl Franson, Gregory Galvin, Judith Lawes, Richard Hughes, Mila Limson, Elizabth Normen and Wendell Stephenson.  The West Hartford Historic District Commission is the town body which works to protect and preserve the architectural integrity and character of three town-designated districts including the Buena Vista Historic District, the Boulevard-Raymond Road Historic District, and the West Hill Historic District, as well as eight individual properties composed of eighteenth and early nineteenth century farmhouses.
