| The Faxon Library to show "The Bee Movie" outside, under the stars: An outdoor showing of the family film "The Bee Movie" will be held on Thursday, August 21, in the Faxon Library parking lot. The movie, which is rated PG, will be projected onto the side of the Puritan Furniture building next door to the library. Families are asked to bring lawn chairs for the event, which will start at 8:30 p.m. The library is located at 1073 New Britain Avenue. The movie is free, but tickets must be obtained in advance by calling the Faxon Library at 561-8201. The rain location will be the Elmwood Community Center auditorium.
This event is supported through the generous support of the Liftig Family, the Elmwood Senior Center, the Sheehan-Hillborn-Breen Funeral Home, Kearns & Kearns PC, and the Friends of the West Hartford Public Library.
Westmoor Park’s Plant-A-Row for the Hungry to be on HGTV: A camera crew from the Home and Gardening network filmed children from the summer camp and volunteers harvesting vegetables from Westmoor Park’s Plant-A-Row for the Hungry on July 31st for the HGTV show “Gardening by the Yard”. Westmoor’s Horticulturist Jane Gottier was the featured local celebrity who shared highlights the park’s Plant-a-Row for the Hungry. Since 1999, about 3,000 lbs. of 35 different varieties of vegetables have been grown and given to The House of Bread homeless shelter in Hartford and to our two senior centers. Vegetables are delivered to the shelter at 11 AM and they are on the table by Noon. The program’s success is attributed to local volunteers tend to the garden. The HGTV show will air in the Spring 2009.

Power shut off on Steele Road: CL&P has notified residents on Steele Road that power would be turned off on Wednesday, August 6 so that the power lines could be moved to make way for a new traffic island. Paving occurred on Thursday on the section of Steele Road from Strafford Road to Albany Avenue.
Paving schedule: During the week of Monday, August 11, paving will occur on Barksdale Road, Brewster Road and South Street. A “Look Both Ways” graphic with big eyes will be inlaid in the road in front of pedestrian crossing at Norfeldt School to teach children to be careful before crossing the road.
Bids for Multi-Use Trail in Elmwood to open: Bids to create a bituminous walkway-bike path will be opened on August 21. The one-mile trail will loop from Elmwood Community Center to South Quaker Lane to New Park Avenue.
Ready, Set, Read! Pre-kindergarteners got a taste of things to come at the Family Resource Center’s “1-2-3 Read with Me” summer program at Charter Oak Academy in West Hartford. The curriculum is intended to build vocabulary and prepare youngsters for reading. The Family Resource Center (FRC) offers an integrated system of family support services that enhance parenting, promote family involvement with the schools, and help children to succeed academically, socially and emotionally. The FRC has been selected as a “School of the 21st Century: National Demonstration Site” by the Yale University Bush Center for Child Development. The “1-2-3 Read with Me” program is funded by the Raymond Foundation. A program of the Bridge Family Center, the FRC serves nearly 1,000 children and parents in West Hartford each year.
