Welcome! Bulky and Metal item waste collection refers to the removal of large items, such as couches, furniture and appliances that cannot be collected as part of the automated trash collection system. After you purchase a permit or permits and schedule your items for collection, these items are collected curbside on your regularly scheduled trash collection day. Only residential areas that currently receive curbside residential trash collection service are eligible for this collection service. Residential apartments and condominiums with dumpster service should contact their dumpster service provider for information on collecting these items. Mixed use properties and commercial properties with private collection should contact their collection providers. Bulky items collected at the curb are taken to the CRRA facility in Hartford for disposal. Appliances and metal items are collected separately and taken to a metal recycling contractor in Plainville for processing. CFC appliances, such as air conditioners, refrigerators and dehumidifiers, also have their CFC contents recovered before they are processed as scrap metal. Purchasing a Permit: Permits are available with one phone call by contacting Paine's, Inc. at (860) 658-9481. Permits can also be obtained 24-hours a day on the West Hartford website or in person at the Customer Service Desk in the lobby of Town Hall during business hours, Monday through Friday. Cash and check are accepted in person. However, when purchasing permits online or in person, you much remember to call Paine's to schedule pickup before 2:00pm at least one business day prior to your regularly schedule collection. Permits for appliances cost $30 per item for disposal. Effective July 1, 2010, permits for mattresses and box springs will cost $45 per item. All other bulky or metal permits cost $20 each for up to 3 cubic yards (the size of a reasonanbly loaded standard-size pick-up truck). You must obtain a separate permit for bulky and metal items, since they are collected and disposed of separately. Permits are non-refundable, non-transferable and valid for 2 weeks from the date they are issued. Permits are valid for 1 use only. There will be no refunds for permitted collections that have been scavenged. Scavenging is illegal in West Hartford and should be reported to Police with a vehicle description and license plate number if possible. Permits must be purchased by 2:00pm at least one business day prior to your regular collection day. A permit for Monday collection would have to be purchased by 2:00pm on the previous Friday. Bulky and metal collections must be at the curb by 6:00am on your regular collection day. Depending on the number of scheduled stops for the day, the trash hauler may not be able to collect your items until the day after your scheduled trash pick-up. The following would be acceptable combinations of permits for one address on any given week:
